A History of In-a-Spin Fiber Arts

Sharon and her angora rabbit

Spinning off an angora rabbit

In-A-Spin Fiber Arts was created by artisan Sharon LaFera over 25 years ago. Since then, In-A-Spin Fiber Arts has grown to offer dozens of unique hand made toys, housewares and wearables made from natural fibers.

Most of our products are made using hand spun fibers which have been cleaned, carded, dyed, spun, and finally knit or crochet into an In-A-Spin creation. Since the processing of the fiber is done in Sharon's studio she has a greater control over how the final product will look.

The multi-step process of creating an In-A-Spin product:

1. Wool fleeces are hand combed to remove hay, dirt, and any other objects that may be in the wool.
2. After the fleece is combed it is washed by hand in small batches.
3. The fiber is dyed using a non-toxic dye. Sharon uses rainwater that she has collected to dye her wool. In the Winter, wool is dyed in a pot over her woodstove, and in the summer months wool is placed outdoors to solar dye.
4. Now the fleece is cleaned and dyed, the next step is to get it ready for spinning by turning the wool into roving using a drum carder.
5. The roving is then spun into yarn which is either plyed with more of the same color yarn, another color, or sometimes even plyed with a different fiber such as Mohair.
6. Finally, the step we have been waiting for! This fantastic handmade yarn is now knitted, crochet, and/or felted into an In-A-Spin creation.
